If You Want To Make Money, Don’t Be A Gospel Artiste – Frank Edwards |

In Nigeria, music is said to be profitable for the superstars. In 2019, Boomplay which is arguably the most-used streaming platform by mainstream Nigeria released its list of most played genres in Nigerian music. Gospel was the leading genre.

But on January 12, 2020, Nigerian gospel superstar, Frank Edwards visited Punch Newspapers. During his conversation with the platform, he discussed a number of issues and subtly opined that Nigerian gospel music is not as profitable as it could be. This discussion came after he was asked why gospel singers are rarely used as brand ambassadors.

His response goes thus, “There are so many reasons. Firstly, you have to understand that the industry and ministry is not the same thing. Gospel music is a ministry, the other one is an industry, so it functions fully like that.

“The gospel ministry is totally different from the secular industry even though you might say that there is a business side of it which makes it similar. But in gospel ministry, the business aspect of it is never the focus. I tell people that if you want to make money, don’t do gospel music; you would have a lot of issues.

“Gospel music means one is reaching out to people through music; the others are strictly entertainment or at least 70-80 per cent entertainment. The company would rather give the opportunity to musicians who sing songs that all religions, including Christians, would dance to, either at a party or in a club.

“The companies are looking for numbers, and they would give the brand ambassadorship to someone who everybody loves their music. If the companies give it to gospel singers like me, people who don’t listen to gospel would probably not pay attention.

50 Cent asks if he’s gay because he still finds Halle Berry attractive after she said she’d play a trans man

Actor Halle Berry made a public apology after receiving backlash for saying she was interested in playing a trans man. People weren’t happy with Berry’s remarks, particularly when trans people are so under-represented in film and television. In her apology, Berry said she wants to become an “ally” both on and off-camera.

Now 50 Cent has given his opinion on the whole furore, for reasons which are entirely unclear.

He seemed perplexed by the whole thing, and bizarrely asked whether it’s “gay” to find Halle Berry attractive after she expressed interest in playing a trans man.

*Face palms*

Of course Berry playing a man wouldn’t make her a man, which you’d think would be obvious to everyone. Plus, finding a man attractive (either trans or cisgender) doesn’t necessarily make someone gay, because bisexual, pansexual and queer people exist.

Anyway, none of this stopped 50 Cent from basically asking his followers: Fellas is it gay for men to think women are attractive?

This is far from the worst comment 50 Cent has made about the LGBTQ+ community.

In 2010, he suggested that his “homie” shot up a gay wedding after he had a falling out with gay blogger Perez Hilton. The same year, PinkNews reports he suggested that men who do not sleep with women should “just kill” themselves.

He wrote: “If you are a man and your [sic] over 25 and you don’t eat p***y just kill yourself damn it. The world will be a better place.”

Awful.

So it’s fair to say that 50 Cent won’t be headlining Pride anytime soon.

And perhaps he should keep his opinions on Berry – who at least had the decency to apologise thoughtfully – to himself.
